I painted this particular scene, hoping to contrast the light and dark, soft and hard. I allowed a lot of water in my washes for the background, letting the water "guide the paint." For the foreground, I used thick, opaque strokes, adding the yellow on the flowers after the orange, and then highlighting part of the flowers by scratching away paint with the blade of an Exacto knife. I like this image because it implies bright sunlight, even as evening sets in.
